Summary

Home of one of the world's most ancient and enduring civilizations, Iran has been at the nexus of world history for the past three thousand years。 Situated at the crossroads between East and West, it has been marked by its encounters with other cultures and has influenced them with its own。 From paradise gardens and Persian carpets to the mystical poetry of Rumi and Hafez, Iran's contributions have earned it a place among history's most refined and sophisticated societies。 In this book, Richard Foltz traces the spread of Iranian culture among diverse populations ranging from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, and along the Silk Roads as far as China, from prehistoric times up to the present day。 He emphasizes the range of contributions Iran has made to world history by highlighting the roles of key figures such as the ancient empire-builders Cyrus the Great and Darius I, the medieval polymath Avicenna, and early modern Mughal rulers such as Shah Jahan, who built India's
celebrated Taj Mahal。

From the establishment of the Pahlavi dynasty by Reza Shah in 1925 until the 1979 revolution under the charismatic leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran embarked on a modernization process that led to the spread of literacy and the growth of the women's movement, making it one of the most advanced nations in the developing world。 Lack of political freedoms has continued to frustrate many Iranians, however, and the country is often seen as an international pariah in the West。 Iran today is rarely treated well in Western news headlines, despite remarkable achievements by individual Iranians in a wide range of fields。 Encompassing religion, literature, the arts, and politics, Iran in World History offers a comprehensive history of one of the world's most influential civilizations and offers nuanced examples of its continuing role in the world today。

This is a slim 124 page volume that’s dense with insights and reads smoothly。 The coverage of historic periods is quite even, with good information on pre-Aryan civilizations, and every empire, invading horde or regime since。 I found things to note on most pages。 However, according to the title, I expected that Foltz would shed more light on how Iranian thought, art, religion, etc。 has influenced other nations。 The main focus, however, was the stream of events within the zone of Persianate socie This is a slim 124 page volume that’s dense with insights and reads smoothly。 The coverage of historic periods is quite even, with good information on pre-Aryan civilizations, and every empire, invading horde or regime since。 I found things to note on most pages。 However, according to the title, I expected that Foltz would shed more light on how Iranian thought, art, religion, etc。 has influenced other nations。 The main focus, however, was the stream of events within the zone of Persianate society。 The forces described are more political or military than cultural。 Foltz explains the events that have shaped Iran, but not so much the people’s cultural evolution or their influence on the world。 。。。more

Not a very substantial book, nor is it impartial, specifically in the last chapter where a lot of facts of the new regime are sugarcoated。

Richard Foltz’s Iran in World History is a very concise account of some 4000 years history of Iranian people, from their nomadic existence in the southern Urals up to the presidency of Hassan Rouhani, who was elected in 2013。 The book is a general overview。 It doesn’t offer deep insight。 But for anyone interested in Iran, it is a very nice introduction。 Iran in World History focuses a lot on the cultural elements of Iranian civilization and doesn’t confine itself to the borders of present-day Ir Richard Foltz’s Iran in World History is a very concise account of some 4000 years history of Iranian people, from their nomadic existence in the southern Urals up to the presidency of Hassan Rouhani, who was elected in 2013。 The book is a general overview。 It doesn’t offer deep insight。 But for anyone interested in Iran, it is a very nice introduction。 Iran in World History focuses a lot on the cultural elements of Iranian civilization and doesn’t confine itself to the borders of present-day Iran。 We are offered a larger picture of the Iranian cultural world。 Foltz includes Persian speakers of Central Asia (today’s Tajikistan as well as some parts of Uzbekistan), Afghanistan, and southwest Pakistan。 Cultural exchanges between India and Iran throughout the centuries are also not forgotten。 On the other hand, he mostly ignores the Turkic-speaking people and other ethnicities。 Foltz touches cultural values and popular traditions such as Noruz rather than giving a more distant academic stance。 I also felt that he likes Iran a lot。 There were a few emotional sentences。 The book is a mix of a bit of everything。 Some parts, especially early chapters, aren’t well-organized。 They can be confusing。 There are also some repetitions。 This is not a well-edited book。 At times it felt like the author wrote it for the sake of writing it, or at least he was hard pressed by deadlines and tucked this book somewhere in his busy schedule。Iran in World History is an average book。 Bland but useful。 。。。more

I suspect this is a good overview of the history of Persia/Iran for those coming in reasonably new to the topic。 Unfortunately, I had already read both the amazing Roy Mottahedeh's The Mantle Of The Prophet: Learning And Power In Modern Iran and Homa Katouzian's The Persians: Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern Iran。 The former was a more entertaining overview, and the latter covered the topic in much more depth, leaving this as having main strengths both in length, and in getting a different viewpoin I suspect this is a good overview of the history of Persia/Iran for those coming in reasonably new to the topic。 Unfortunately, I had already read both the amazing Roy Mottahedeh's The Mantle Of The Prophet: Learning And Power In Modern Iran and Homa Katouzian's The Persians: Ancient, Mediaeval and Modern Iran。 The former was a more entertaining overview, and the latter covered the topic in much more depth, leaving this as having main strengths both in length, and in getting a different viewpoint on various topics。I expected it to focus a great deal on the impact of Persian culture on the rest of the world (well, ok, probably mostly Western Europe, but a woman can hope)。 But it was a more conventional history than that。At the risk of damning with faint praise, however, it was a serviceable overview with good attention to where debates or uncertainties exist, at an easily readable length (no small feat for a topic this huge)。 。。。more

It's too easy to see the world in vertical silos: this is Iranian history, that is Turkish history, this is Islamic, etc。 It's natural to organize things in that way, but it can make a subject like Iran (née Persia) unusually daunting, as we know from casual observations of history that 1) it has a very long history and 2) it was intimately involved with many other peoples。It's all in this volume: Iran's early origins; a discussion of the Indo-European languages and where Persian fits in--and wh It's too easy to see the world in vertical silos: this is Iranian history, that is Turkish history, this is Islamic, etc。 It's natural to organize things in that way, but it can make a subject like Iran (née Persia) unusually daunting, as we know from casual observations of history that 1) it has a very long history and 2) it was intimately involved with many other peoples。It's all in this volume: Iran's early origins; a discussion of the Indo-European languages and where Persian fits in--and why that's an issue when you're looking into Iranian history; their dealings with both the Indian and Greek cultures; their connection to the peoples of the steppes and their influence on the Turkic peoples (another subject you might need courage to delve into); and their relationship to Arabs and Islam。 Foltz went into great detail about the last part, and it was a fascinating examination of how two great cultures interacted with each other, both positively and negatively。For all of the thoroughness, it did feel at times as if it was hard to get an insight into the Iranian people because so many other related issues were discussed。 However, I think that's part of the point: one can't simply characterize group of people who have been shaped by so many diverse influences。Recommended as a primer for Iranian history 。。。more
